Stacey Summers, Team Leader

Relay for Life is a team fundraising effort sponsored by the American Cancer Society.  The actual Relay is a fun-filled event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs for your American Cancer Society.  During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps.  Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.  Winterville UMC has put together a "team" to help fight cancer and participate in Relay for Life in Oglethorpe County.  We will have several fundraising events planned over the course of the next couple of months leading up to Relay and certainly hope that you will come out to support our team.  And better yet, become part of our team!  You don't have to run or walk laps to be a part of our team, everyone can participate regardless of your age or physical capabilities.

In addition to these fundraising activities, we will also be taking donations for luminaries, torches, and pictures to be shown the night of Relay - forms will be available at our various activities.  Cancer has affected the lives of so many of us, I am sure each and everyone of you knows someone that has had or has cancer.  We have lost several of our church family to this disease.  We need to work together - come out and support this effort to fight this killer and celebrate life.

Luminaria are available to honor a family member or friend who has survived cancer or in memory of a loved one who lost their fight with this disease.  A $5 donation places a symbolic luminary candle in the church until Relay night at which time all candles will convert to real luminaries to encourage and remind us of why we relay.

Schedule of Events

Opening Ceremony: The Opening Ceremony brings everyone together for a high-energy event kickoff to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, to inspire hope by sharing recent accomplishments and progress, and to remind everyone that while we are winning this battle, fighting cancer is a year-round priority.
  Time: TBD

Survivor Lap: During the Survivors Lap, upbeat music plays as all cancer survivors at the event take the first lap around the track cheered on by the other participants who line the track, celebrating their victory over cancer.
   Time: TBD

Luminaria Ceremony: The Luminaria Ceremony is a time to remember people we have lost to cancer, to support people who currently have cancer, and to honor people who have fought cancer in the past. The power of this ceremony lies in providing an opportunity for people to work through grief and find hope.
  Time: TBD

Closing Ceremony: The Closing Ceremony is a time to remember the lives of those lost and to celebrate that each of us has committed, through our participation in a Relay event, to fight back against this disease over the next year.
